•This paper extends the antecedents of green products purchasing to the external environment.•Three experiments were used to test the impact of social crowding on green products purchasing.•This study examines the impact of the green products’ price on consumers’ purchase intentions.•Social crowding had a positive impact on consumers’ intentions to purchase green products.
