•Analyze the cloud platform construction model of State Grid Corporation of China.•Establishment of cloud platform investment indicator system from the perspective of information risk.•An MCDM method combining interval fuzzy type-2 number, GCWM method and VIKOR algorithm is constructed.•Comprehensive case study, sensitivity analysis, and comparative analysis are conducted.•Suggestions for the development of power cloud platforms are provided based on numerical analysis results.
