•NCQD promoted the cumulative CH4 yield in photo-AD system under visible-light condition.•In photo-AD with NCQD, the dominant strain was Methanosarciniales with an abundance of 69.0%.•In photo-AD with NCQD, the ROS was not sufficient to cause damage to microorganisms.•NCQD promoted electron transfer and provided photoelectrons for microorganisms in photo-AD.•NCQD mainly promoted methanogenesis by providing photoelectrons.
