In situ confinement of PdO within zeolite as robust adsorbent/catalyst for toluene elimination

•PdO NPs are successfully confined within ZSM-5 by a one-pot hydrothermal method.•Pd(en)22+ is sandwiched in small piece zeolite with high dispersion during crystallization.•Pd@Z5 keeps stable toluene adsorption efficiency in fluctuation toluene atmosphere.•Pd@Z5 is stable when the reaction temperature fluctuated from 200 ∼ 800 °C.•Pd@Z5 shows enhanced SO2 resistance for toluene oxidation at 210 °C.
