Hybrid-excited magneto-responsive soft actuators for grasping and manipulation of objects

•A two-step axial-radial magnetization method is proposed for soft grippers.•A hybrid-excited magnetic actuation method is proposed for soft grippers.•The soft gripper has a high lifting ratio, fast and adjustable response performance.•A selective actuation for multiple magnetic soft grippers is achieved.
