Practical Approaches to Pharmacogenomics in Patients Using Vitamins/Supplements and Medical Marijuana

Herbal supplements, vitamins, and marijuana products are widely used yet given limited regulatory scope as compared to prescription medications . These products have the potential to interact with other drugs and each other through intersecting metabolic pathways. Pharmacogenomics studies individual variations in relevant genes impacting drug response, including metabolic pathways. Therefore, clinicians should consider the potential for gene-supplement interactions, particularly with agents that have data supporting their involvement in major metabolic pathways. In this review, we summarize the best available information regarding supplements, vitamins, and marijuana products to aid clinicians in screening for possible risks and educating patients.
