Estimating the heterogeneous effect of life satisfaction on cognitive functioning among older adults: Evidence of US and UK national surveys

•Null evidence of population-average effects of life satisfaction on cognitive functioning was found in the US and UK samples.•Our machine learning approach showed evidence of effect heterogeneity across individuals both in the US and UK.•Life satisfaction was least beneficial among those with poor socioeconomic, health and psychological status in both surveys.
