•A high-efficiency SLG/Mo/Cu2MnSnS4/SnS2/ZnMgO/ZnO:Al/Pt solar cell is proposed.•Sn-/Zn-based (oxide) buffer and window layers of the emerging CMTS solar cell are optimized to achieve the best output using SCAPS-1D.•The VOC, JSC, FF, and PCE of the CMTS solar cell are simulated as 1.236 V, 23.69 mA/cm2, 85.49%, and 25.03%, respectively.•The impact of different properties of each active layer of optimized structures, such as bandgap, layer thickness, carrier concentration, etc., are analyzed.
