•MOS2 nanosheets are prepared by hydrothermal synthesis and ultrasonication exfoliation.•Ultrathin TFC membranes (60-nm MoS2) were prepared by vacuum filtration.•MoS2 membranes show dye desalination performance superior to many leading membranes.
