•Both the mean and the variation of temperature affect Hg accumulation in Daphnia.•Temperature oscillation decreased MeHg accumulation via the trophic pathway.•Temperature oscillation increased MeHg accumulation via the water pathway.•IHg accumulation decreased via both pathways under temperature oscillation.•Fe, Zn, and Cu showed pattern similar to IHg via the trophic pathway.
