Gender split and safety behavior of cyclists and e-scooter users in Asbury Park, NJ

•Cyclists are more likely to wear helmets and to use the bike lane than e-scooter users.•Shared e-scooters are more of a group activity than private cycling.•Women were less likely to wear a helmet and ride on the road.•The gender gap among e-scooter users is narrower than among cyclists.•E-scooter users take fewer safety precautions but are more gender equitable.
