•Liquid water transport behavior during the operation of a hydrogen–oxygen PEMFC was investigated.•Local current density response characteristics during liquid water transport was analyzed.•The maximum value of cathode liquid water coverage rage in flow field is about 16%.•Performance degradation occurs when the local liquid water coverage rage exceeds 20%.
