Precipitation attribution distance

•A new spatial verification measure for precipitation is presented.•It estimates the spatial distance between precipitation in two fields.•Unlike many other metrics, it works for binary and continuous precipitation fields.•It provides a good and meaningful estimate of precipitation displacement.•It is fast, numerically stable, and works with irregular grids.
