As part of a longitudinal naturalistic study, we intend to use electronic health record (EHR) data to clarify how the treatment of MDD impacts the subsequent development of substance use disorder (SUD). We propose and validate a methodologic framework for using variables obtained in the EHR to diagnose MDD and nonnicotine SUD.
