Developing consensus: a look at the up-to-date research, guidelines, and principles for the integration of pharmacogenetics (pgx) in child and adolescent psychiatric care

The field of pharmacogenomics (PGx) continues to spark debate among clinicians despite the expanding availability of this technology. Among practitioners who utilize PGx testing, there is often inadequate knowledge of the resources and studies that have identified relevant gene-medication pairs, or the best approach for applying test results. As such, there is the risk of providers being negatively influenced by pharmacogenetic information. This presentation will review the basic science of PGx and emerging data supporting relevant gene-medication pairs, with a focus on antidepressant treatment. In addition, there will be an introduction of a web-based tool to help support providers in the interpretation and application of genetic results. A rational model for integration of PGx findings into clinical care will be reviewed.
