•Novel strategy using Meloidogyne incognita as bait could isolate parasitically potent rhizospheric Trichoderma spp.•First demonstration for nematophagous ability of T. inhamatum, T. kunmingense, T. lixii, T. neotropicale and T. yunnanense.•Elucidation of T. yunnanense as a potential and effective nematode biocontrol agent.
