•CCMF using NF and RO achieved 97% recovery of PFAA contaminated tap water.•Two- to three-log rejection of most PFAAs by tight NF and RO observed.•Loose NF provided poor rejection of PFAAs at high recovery.•PFAA properties and concentration, and ionic strength impacted rejection.•Volume reduction of residuals by CCMF could improve PFAA destruction efficacy.
