Review of the Application of Acoustic Emission Technology in Green Manufacturing

Green manufacturing is an advanced technology that aims to improve resource utilization, reduce energy consumption, and prevent environmental pollution. It maximizes the balance between environmental and economic benefits. Various failures and abnormalities in the manufacturing process affect the product quality and cause losses. Therefore, a monitoring and control of the processing are essential for a green manufacturing. As a standard non-destructive monitoring technology, acoustic emission has been widely used in machining and manufacturing. This paper reviews the application of acoustic emission technology in the field of green manufacturing. Firstly, the acoustic emission technology can monitor workpiece machining defects (such as surface damage and tool wear), reduce the scrap rate, and contribute to the improvement of resource utilization. Secondly, this work introduces the application of acoustic emission technology in monitoring the level of machining energy dissipation, thereby establishing the machine tool energy model for the improvement of the energy efficiency. It, thereafter, describes the application of acoustic emission technology for green cutting to minimize the pollution of cutting fluid to the environment. Finally, the paper discusses the shortcomings and future development direction of acoustic emission applications in the field of green manufacturing. This review is intended to be used as a roadmap for researchers who are interested in the acoustic emission technology used in green manufacturing.
