•Investigated the surface microstructure of SWPM after WD test and the explored the mineral components on crack sidewalls.•Established the mudstone crack area (MCA) model and studied the crack expanding process of SWPM in wetting and drying conditions by molecular dynamics.•Clarified the cracking mechanisms of strongly weathered purple mudstone under WD effect.•Provided a theoretical basis for studying the mudstone cracking.
