•Throughout the year, urban forest edges are warmer and drier compared to forest interiors.•Warm and dry microclimates are present up to large edge distances in urban forests.•A denser forest structure buffers the microclimate irrespective of edge distance.•Maintaining dense canopies in wide edge zones can enhance microclimate buffering.
