Ku-Band Planar Antenna with High Gain, Wider Bandwidth and Higher Power Handling Ability for Airborne Application

Simple design of a planar antenna with high gain and wider bandwidth is presented. It employs electromagnetically coupled patch (EMCP) configuration for a wider impedance bandwidth. The proposed antenna is not PCB based and uses two copper plate separated by a dielectric of low permittivity ($\varepsilon_{\mathbf{r}}$ = 1.09 at 10 GHz). The design can sustain high power because of the electromagnetic coupling between the patches. All necessary simulations have been carried out using Finite Element Method (FEM) based commercial solver HFSS. A prototype has been realized and evaluated. The antenna promises 14.67% impedance bandwidth and 9.1 dBi of gain. The antenna provides an elliptic coverage with half-power beamwidths of 76° x 48° in two principal cuts. Relevant results are presented.
