•A new method for the analysis of 15 pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs) and their N-oxides (PANOs).•The method for analysis of 15 PAs/PANOs in soil of tea garden was first developed.•PAs/PANOs in tea were derived from the weeds in tea garden.•Intermedine-N-oxide was the highest PANO in weeds.
