•The effects of activated pyrochar on AD performance were investigated.•A methane production rate of 1.6 L/L/d was obtained with CO2-activated pyrochar.•Pyrochar mainly played a strengthening role in the early and middle stages of AD.•Cornstalk pyrochar-N2 had a positive correlation with isoleucyl-alanine.
