•Between 2008 and 2020, 8 of 11 medium-large mammal specieś habitats declined in the Greater Mahale Ecosystem, western Tanzania.•Habitat remained stable for chimpanzees, but declined for roan antelope, elephant, and buffalos.•Riparian forests exhibited less habitat loss than woodlands.•Habitat stability related to preference for steep terrain or riparian forests.•Proximity to deforestation was the environmental variable most pronouncedly explaining habitat decline.
