•Citrate-coated silver nanoplates (AgNTs) modified with 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (MBA).•AgNTs-MBA exhibit tunable morphological stability in saline environments.•The amount of MBA attached on nanoparticle surface controls AgNTs’ etching degree.•AgNTs-MBA exhibit intrinsic photoluminescence emission and SERS fingerprint signal.•AgNTs’ stability is critical in controlling their photoluminescence/SERS signal.
