•An ecological equation of state (EESR) was published in 2012.•A 2nd ecological equation of state (EESH), ignoring the first one, published in 2022.•Collating EESH vs. EESR, references, theoretical principles, and empirical evidences.•EESH: weak patterns, far from physical models, not fit for ecological principles.•EESH cannot be considered an ecological equation of state.
