•Zeapylanolactone is a noncanonical strigolactone isolated from maize.•Its stereostructure has not been discussed.•(±)-trans-Zeapylanolactone was successfully synthesized as a diastereomeric mixture.•This synthesis was completed without the use of typical protective groups.•The overall relative configuration of zeapyranolactone was determined by 3D ED.
