•Ce2S3 nanocube was synthesized via a high-temperature sulfating method.•ZnxCd1-xS was grown on Ce2S3 nanocube to form a tight junction.•Ce2S3/ZCS achieves greatly enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution.•Ce2S3/ZCS heterojunction boosts the redox performance via a Z-scheme mechanism.
