Element-removal global digital image correlation for accurate discontinuous deformation field measurement in fracture mechanics

•Element-removal global DIC is proposed for discontinuous deformation measurement.•The elements covering the discontinuities are removed from global DIC.•All nodes can be accurately matched even with some element being removed.•Displacement field with a crack deflection is measured by Element-removal global DIC.
