Need for standard operating procedures using postpartum hemorrhage as an example

Postpartum hemorrhage remains one of the leading causes of maternal morbidity and mortality worldwide and is an obstetric emergency. Several analyses of pregnancy related deaths interpreted that one third to one fourth of these could have been prevented, for example by improving what are referred to as non-technical skills. Standard operating procedures (SOP) are standardized step-by-step working instructions in critical areas such as medicine aimed at reducing miscommunication and achieving efficiency and quality. International societies of obstetricians are calling for uniformized standard operating procedures to improve quality in the treatment of postpartum hemorrhage. The implementation of SOPs is the basis for success in the treatment of postpartum hemorrhage. It is also essential to offer a platform to repeat and train these practices.
