Archaeological Survey and Landscape Dynamics in Tarifa's Countryside (Cadiz). Protohistoric Roots of the Territory of Baelo Claudia

The preliminary results of the survey carried out in the territory of Bailo / La Silla del Papa and Baelo Claudia are presented in this paper. The spatial analysis and intensive survey conducted in 2015 and 2016 allowed the identification of a complex territorial system led by Bailo / La Silla del Papa throughout the 1st millennium BC. The transfer of the city to the coast and the rise of a maritime town from the first century onwards, far from breaking with the settlement pattern and the agriculture-based economy of the previous phase, made its consolidation possible by adopting new Roman forms.
