With light to green hydrogen

Green hydrogen is a key player in the energy transformation. While the public discourse focuses on green hydrogen produced via photovoltaic or wind power and water electrolysis, this article informs about the state-of-the-art in research on direct water splitting with light. It covers fundamental concepts and processes for water splitting, concrete implementations as well as current challenges for transferring this technology to large-scale applications. In order to overcome the challenges that remain, it is also necessary to integrate this topic into chemistry education. Experiments, digital media, and teaching concepts developed for this purpose are pointed out.
