摘要
Mandibular fractures are among the most common maxillofacial injuries and the condylar process represents a predilection site. The question of the best possible treatment of these fractures remains a matter of debate to this day. While pediatric fractures are treated by closed reduction in the vast majority of cases, opinions differ in adult patients. This review discusses various criteria for deciding between closed and open reduction, presents the current data, and highlights the advantages and disadvantages of each treatment. In addition, possible posttherapeutic courses are demonstrated using patient examples. An understanding of the complex influencing factors enables selection of the individually best concept and optimal counseling of the patient.
