Negative impact of covid-19 pandemic on outpatient mental health care in Coquimbo region, Chile

Introduction: COVID-19 pandemic has strained healthcare systems worldwide and has had a negative impact on the mental health of the population. Mental health services face the challenge to address people's mental health needs in contexts of health emergency. Objective: The objective of this study was to estimate and explain the effect of COVID-19 pandemic on the outpatient services of public mental health care in Coquimbo region, Chile. Materials and Methods: A sequential mixed method design (DEXPLIS) was used. In the first stage, an analysis of uninterrupted time series from 2017 to 2021 was conducted on mental health care consultations included in the monthly statistical record (MSR), revealing a decrease of 56% in outpatient visits by 2020. In a second qualitative phase, experiences and perceptions were explored and analyzed through thematic content analysis of focus groups with managers, professionals, and community representatives. Results and Conclusion: There was a decrease in face-to-face outpatient consultations in Coquimbo region. Planning with territorial relevance and a community approach is essential in case of similar emergencies.
