•The HEGs were prepared by copolymerization of soft and hard monomers in hydrophobic DES.•Abundant non-covalent interactions and hydrophobic interactions were employed for the self-adhesive, self-healing mechanism.•The HEGs were used for underwater adhesives, strain sensors and self-healing electroluminescent device.
