The nature of carbon deposits and their formation pathways during catalytic supercritical water gasification of glycerol

•An increase in space velocity increases the coke formation over Ru/CNF.•Organic deposits were mainly represented by unsaturated aliphatic compounds.•Ru facilitates the formation of unsaturated compounds from glycerol in aqueous phase.•Ru makes aromatics from the unsaturated compounds on the catalyst surface.
