Multiple pregnancy

Multiple pregnancies are considered high-risk pregnancies, as they are associated with an increased risk of various complications for both mother and fetuses. Correct dating of the pregnancy and accurate classification of its chorionicity and amnionicity in the first trimester forms the essential basis for optimal pregnancy care. Both prenatal care as well as the ideal birth timing and mode depend on correct classification of the pregnancy. In particular, monochorionic pregnancies are associated with specific complications such as twin-to twin transfusion syndrome. Thus, in monochorionic pregnancies 2-weekly pregnancy checks are indicated. Early detection of complications and their proper management have been shown to minimize the risks of poor outcome. Therefore, it is often beneficial to plan care of multiple pregnancies in collaboration with or at a perinatal center.
