•Hydrothermal liquefaction of phycocyanin was conducted (300–500 °C and 20–1800 s).•Machine learning models were developed for fast hydrothermal liquefaction.•Highest biocrude yield of 35.0 wt% was achieved at 500 °C and 40 s.•55.2% of the energy in phycocyanin transferred to biocrude.•Random forest has the highest accuracy for predicting biocrude yields (R2 = 0.93).
