摘要
Overview and relevance: In this tutorial we focus on the interplay between operations research and database theory, i.e. on how the optimization tools from operations research can contribute to the solution of optimization problems occurring in database. Operations research is a field dealing with the solution of optimization and decision problems mathematically well formulated. The objective of this tutorial is to provide researchers in database theory with the basics of operations research, in order to enable them next to improve their own researches. This tutorial is targeted for researchers having never heard about operations research. Attendees should have a background in databases and information systems. Knowledge of complexity and decidability is a plus. The tutorial is divided into three main parts: Introduction to operations research: elements of complexity, exact methods, heuristics. Application to the horizontal partitioning in data warehouses. Application to exploratory data analysis. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that operations research for database theory is proposed for a tutorial at ADBIS. Neither did this appear in the tutorials of top tier data management conferences (VLDB, SIGMOD/PODS, ICDE, EDBT/ICDT) in the last 3 years. Recent PODS tutorials cover very specific topics (e.g., Modern Lower Bound Techniques in Database Theory and Constraint Satisfaction by Dániel Marx or Fine-Grained Complexity Analysis of Queries: From Decision to Counting and Enumeration by Arnaud Durand at PODS 2020).
