•VA BIC is a brief intervention and novel in a residential substance use population.•It is possible to study VA BIC in patients discharged from residential SUD program.•Pilot data suggest VA BIC may improve suicidal ideation & perceived burdensomeness.•VA BIC may improve engagement in mental healthcare in first month post discharge.
