•This article reviews the anti-hypertensive effects and mechanisms of polyphenols.•High consumption of polyphenol-rich food decreases risk of hypertension.•Gut microbes closely related to in polyphenols' metabolism.•More studies are need to formulate dietary interventions for hypertension.
