Utilization of hemp stalk as a potential resource for bioenergy

•Hemp stalks has a high heating value similar to or slightly lower than some common biomass used in Thailand.•The primary organic elements of hemp stalks are C, H, and O. The C content varies within the range expected for lignocellulosic materials.•Its lignin content of the samples was comparable to those found in most hardwood species.•Hemp stalks showed desirable fuel characteristics with other bioenergy feedstocks, such as high heating value, low ash content, high volatile substance, very low nitrogen content, and do not contain sulfur.•It appears that hemp stalks would have good potential as bioenergy.
