•Ba2CuO3.2 (BCO) a high temperature superconducting cuprate with putative 3z2-r2 ground state symmetry due to local coordination of Cu ions•XAS and RIXS are used as element selective techniques to study BCO•A new crystal structure is proposed for BCO, consistent with previous powder-XRD data
