•PNAs, as compared to natural ON possess numerous synthetic and practical advantages.•Furan-PNAs can be used as pro-reactive probes to covalently capture oligonucleotide targets.•Practical insight into design of furan-PNAs has been obtained.•Applications include PNA-DNA or PNA-RNA ICL and oligonucleotide-templated PNA reactions.
