摘要
GI endoscopy places physicians at risk for various occupational exposures, including infectious pathogens, hazardous chemicals, and radiation injury. Accordingly, both universal and risk-specific personal protective equipment (PPE) have been developed to mitigate the risk of occupational exposure. The coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic, in particular, raised awareness of the critical need for effective PPE practices and spurred a rapid expansion of research to guide PPE selection, use, and stewardship. This Technology Status Evaluation Report provides an update of the previous report published in 2010 and outlines the technology underlying the use of specific PPE, including masks, gowns, gloves, and eye protection. It also incorporates new PPE insights gleaned from research conducted in the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic. Specific guidance is provided regarding the selection of PPE for specific clinical scenarios and the proper technique for donning and doffing of PPE.
