Research on Performance Evolvement of Fiber-Reinforced Micro-surfacing Mixture

To evaluate improvement of different fiber on Micro-surfacing mixture performance, the polyester fiber, polypropylene fiber, glass fiber and basalt fiber were respectively added into Micro-surfacing mixture. The workability test, accelerated abrasion test, Hamburg wheel tracking Device (HWTD) test, bending test at low temperature and seepage test were used to be conducted the performance of different Micro-surfacing mixture. The results show that the skid-resistance durability, low-temperature performance, high-temperature performance, moisture susceptibility and water-sealing of fiber Micro-surfacing mixture are enhanced, but the mixing torque of fiber Micro-surfacing mixture is increased by 9.8–25.6%. The enhancement mechanism of selected fibers on Micro-surfacing mixture performance is different, and the skid-resistance durability, high-temperature performance, moisture susceptibility and water-sealing of basalt fiber Micro-surfacing mixture are better than other fiber Micro-surfacing mixture. Meanwhile the torque value of basalt fiber Micro-surfacing mixture in mixing stage is relatively small, and it is increased about 16.9%. However, the improvement of basalt fiber on low-temperature performance of Micro-surfacing is relatively poor, which is enhanced by only about 24.0%. The low-temperature performance of polyester fiber Micro-surfacing is best. The enhancement of fiber on Micro-surfacing mixture performance is closely related to physical indexes of fiber, such as tensile strength and moisture absorption rate. The research results will provide useful reference for application of fiber in preventive maintenance technology.
