Microalgal biotechnology promises a sustainable production of valuable bioproducts. Thanks to their photosynthetic nature, they are able to convert atmospheric CO2 into various products, ranging from simple biomass, platform chemicals for bioplastics to high value compounds for the pharmaceutical and fragrance industry. Here we present important improvements for engineering strategies to advance microalgae as green cell factories for the production of valuable bioproducts.
