Leveraging 3D Multipath Projection in Indoor Localization System with a Single Access Point

Recently, indoor localization using a single access point (AP) with multipath assistance has been greatly appreciated. However, the previous works only consider the multipath propagating in the 2-dimensional (2D) plane while the wireless signals travel along multiple paths in 3-dimensional (3D) space actually, and thus this problem limits the system's performance. This paper thoroughly investigates the feature of multipath propagation in 3D space and solves the problem of indoor localization using a single AP in 3D space with the multipath projection method. Then we develop a prototype of the indoor localization system using the Universal Software Radio Peripheral (USRP). Finally, we experiment in a real indoor environment. The experimental results show that our proposed system has an 0.51 m localization accuracy improvement relative to the system without the multipath projection method.
