•AWS and AWNS showed similar decrease in accuracy and speed when completing higher vs. lower N-back loads and responding to phonologically similar vs. neutral words.•AWS were significantly slower than AWNS in 2-back, suggesting differences in working memory during high linguistic demands.•AWS had more false alarms than AWNS, suggesting between group differences in interference control.
