Reduction of nicotine and ethanol intake in alcohol-preferring (UChB) female rats by the α4β2 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor partial agonists 5-bromocytisine and cytisine

•Cytisine and 5-bromocytisine inhibit nicotine and alcohol intake in rats.•5-Bromocytisine is a more effective inhibitor than cytisine.•Resistance does not develop to 5-bromocytisine treatment, unlike cytisine.
